Tinubu to APC: Let’s Keep It Fair and Unified as Primaries Begin.

Ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) nationwide primaries for the 2026 general elections, President Bola Tinubu has urged party members to put unity, fairness, and good sportsmanship first.

In a statement released before the exercise kicks off, the President described these primaries as a defining moment for the party. He reminded everyone that the APC was built on progressive ideals, consensus, and sacrifice and is now heading into its fourth election cycle since it was formed.

The primaries will start with House of Representatives races and wrap up with the presidential primary on May 25. Tinubu said the process shouldn’t be seen as just picking candidates, but as a real test of the party’s togetherness and democratic values.

He noted that leaders have been consulting widely to produce consensus candidates where possible, in line with the Electoral Act and the APC constitution. He called that approach commendable and a good way to reduce internal friction.

Where consensus isn’t reached, the President stressed that all aspirants and delegates must act peacefully and democratically. He warned against divisive tactics, saying the party can’t afford to hurt its own unity or weaken Nigeria’s democracy.

Tinubu had a straightforward message for winners: don’t gloat. And for those who lose: show sportsmanship and stay loyal to the party.

"Our opponents are waiting for us to fight each other. Let’s disappoint them," he said.

He also called on victorious candidates and party leaders at all levels to reconcile aggrieved members and avoid what he termed "do or die politics." Politics, he reminded them, isn’t a zero sum game every APC candidate represents the party’s collective interest.

The President urged governors, party executives, and other stakeholders to ensure a level playing field for all aspirants. Even though only one person will win each slot, he said those who lose should at least be able to trust that the process was transparent and fair.

Tinubu also appealed for more inclusion of women and young people, asking delegates and leaders to give them special consideration. He warned that the APC can’t afford to sideline Nigeria’s two largest demographic groups.

On security, he charged the Nigeria Police Force and other agencies to stay professional and impartial, limiting their role to keeping peace and order.

He wished all aspirants the best, expressing optimism that the eventual candidates will come together to lead the APC to victory in the general elections.
