M uhammadu Buhari’s son, Yusuf Buhari, has emerged winner of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Daura/Sandamu/Mai’adua Federal Constituency seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The primary election, which was conducted under the supervision of the party’s electoral committee, took place on Saturday in Daura, Katsina State, with party delegates and members from the three local government areas participating in the exercise.

Massive victory recorded in the primary

The result was officially announced by the Chairman of the constituency’s APC primary election committee, Lawal Garba, who declared that Yusuf Buhari secured a landslide victory.

According to Garba, Yusuf polled a total of 17,342 votes, overwhelmingly defeating his sole opponent, Auwalu Musa Daura, who scored 480 votes.

Garba said the exercise was conducted in line with the party’s guidelines and that the outcome reflected the choice of party members in the constituency.

Following the declaration, Yusuf Buhari was formally announced as the APC flag bearer for the Daura/Sandamu/Mai’adua Federal Constituency in the forthcoming 2027 general elections.

Buhari pledges unity and inclusiveness

Speaking shortly after his victory was announced, Yusuf Buhari expressed appreciation to party members, delegates, and supporters across the constituency for what he described as their overwhelming confidence in his candidacy.

He pledged to run an inclusive campaign and work with all stakeholders to strengthen the party’s chances in the general elections.

“I will embrace everyone and carry all party members along to ensure that APC emerges victorious in the general elections,” he said.

He also thanked residents of Daura, Sandamu, and Mai’adua for their turnout and support during the primary election, promising to prioritize unity and development across the constituency.

Opponent rejects outcome, alleges irregularities

However, the defeated aspirant, Auwalu Musa Daura — son of former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura — rejected the outcome of the primary election, alleging widespread irregularities.

He raised concerns about the credibility of the direct primary process, insisting that it did not follow the party’s established guidelines.

According to him, many of the individuals allegedly counted during the exercise were not registered members of the APC and did not possess valid membership identification.

“I am not satisfied with what happened today. Evidence is everywhere showing the injustice that was done,” he said.

He further questioned the transparency of the vote counting process, describing it as questionable and lacking credibility.

“The manner of counting was highly questionable, and most of the people counted do not even have party membership cards,” he alleged.

Call for internal democracy and fairness

Despite his rejection of the outcome, Auwalu Musa Daura said his participation in the contest was driven by his belief in internal democracy, fairness, and justice within the ruling party.

He emphasized that every aspirant deserved equal opportunity and a transparent electoral process, warning that failure to uphold fairness could undermine confidence in the party’s internal structures.

He called on the leadership of the APC to review the conduct of the primary election and ensure that future exercises are more transparent and credible to maintain unity among members.

Party yet to issue further reaction

As of the time of filing this report, the APC had not issued an official response to the allegations raised by the defeated aspirant.

The outcome of the primary is expected to shape early political dynamics in the constituency as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
