Tinubu Warns APC Against “Do-or-Die” Politics as 2027 Primaries Kick Off, Urges Unity, Fair Play and Consensus Moves

President Bola Tinubu has cautioned members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) against adopting “do-or-die” politics as the party officially begins its nationwide primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a personally signed statement issued on Thursday to mark the commencement of the APC primaries across the country, Tinubu urged aspirants, party leaders, and delegates to conduct themselves with restraint, respect for democratic principles, and adherence to internal party rules throughout the process.

Start of nationwide primaries

According to the President, the primaries will begin with contests for House of Representatives tickets before progressing through other elective positions, culminating in the presidential primary scheduled for May 25, 2026. He described the exercise as a defining moment for the ruling party, stressing that the outcomes would play a major role in shaping both its unity and its electoral strength going into 2027.

Tinubu noted that internal party elections are a crucial part of democratic governance, but warned that they must not become a source of division or bitterness among members.

“Politics should not be a zero-sum game”

The President cautioned against high-stakes political conduct that treats elections as a winner-takes-all struggle, insisting that such an approach weakens democratic institutions and damages party cohesion.

“We should not play the politics of old; the do-or-die politics that we have put behind us. Politics should never be a zero-sum game,” he said.

He further urged contestants to view the primaries as an opportunity to strengthen unity within the APC rather than deepen internal rifts. According to him, the ability of party members to compete fairly and accept outcomes in good faith would be critical to the party’s long-term stability.

“Election is an essential ingredient of democracy. Where consensus fails, I urge us all to go into the primaries as brothers and sisters,” he added.

Appeal for sportsmanship among candidates

Tinubu also addressed both winners and losers in the forthcoming primaries, emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship and restraint after the conclusion of contests.

“All participants in the primaries, as contestants or voters, must keep the peace and be ready to play as sportsmen and women in the overall interest of the party and our country,” he stated.

He warned against post-election hostility within the party, urging successful candidates not to display arrogance or triumphalism, while encouraging those who lose to accept outcomes peacefully and prepare for future opportunities.

“In every contest, there will be a winner and a loser. I urge the winners not to gloat in victory and the losers to show sportsmanship by taking things in their stride and preparing for another time,” he said.

Consensus arrangements encouraged

The President also highlighted the importance of consensus-building mechanisms within the party, noting that they could help reduce tensions and prevent internal disputes during the primaries.

He said party leaders in several states have already begun discussions aimed at producing consensus candidates in line with provisions of the Electoral Act (2026) and the APC constitution.

“I am aware that, in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act (2026) and our party’s constitution, leaders at various levels have initiated conversations to produce consensus candidates. It is a commendable option that would help in reducing rancour and bad blood among party members,” Tinubu said.

Call for fairness and inclusiveness

Tinubu also issued a strong appeal to governors, party executives, and influential stakeholders within the APC to ensure fairness and equal opportunity for all aspirants participating in the primaries.

“To the party leadership, our governors, and other leaders, I urge you to be fair and just. You must rise above sentiment to offer all aspirants a level playing field,” he stated.

He further stressed the importance of inclusivity in the party’s internal political process, particularly calling for greater participation of women and young people.

“The inclusion of women and youth is dear to my heart. I appeal to voters in the primaries and leaders at all levels to give special consideration to our women and youth in the contest,” he said.

Warning to security agencies

In addition, the President cautioned the Police and other security agencies to strictly limit their involvement in the primaries to maintaining law and order, warning against any form of interference in the electoral process.

“Your duties strictly centre on ensuring peaceful exercise. Nothing more,” he warned.

Optimism about APC unity

Tinubu concluded by expressing optimism that the APC would emerge stronger and more united after the conclusion of its primary elections, urging members to remain committed to the party’s long-term goals and democratic values.

He wished all aspirants success in the forthcoming contests and encouraged them to see the process as part of building a stronger political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
