Tinubu Appoints Retired Major General as Special Adviser on Homeland Security.

President taps seasoned intelligence expert Adeyinka Famadewa to sharpen Nigeria's internal security coordination

President Bola Tinubu has brought on board a retired major general, Adeyinka Famadewa, to serve as his special adviser on homeland security a move aimed at tightening the country's approach to internal threats and intelligence sharing.

The appointment was made public on Monday in a statement by Chris Ugwuegbulam, head of information and public relations at the office of the secretary to the government of the federation. According to Ugwuegbulam, Famadewa's new role is a nod to his "exceptional record of service, strategic expertise, and outstanding contributions to Nigeria's national security architecture."

A circular signed by Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, permanent secretary of the general services office, explained that the president's decision reflects his administration's push to improve how security agencies work together strengthening intelligence-led operations and tackling emerging threats more effectively.

So who exactly is Famadewa? He's a highly decorated retired general with more than three decades of experience in military and intelligence work. His career has spanned national security strategy, intelligence fusion, counter terrorism, and international security diplomacy.

One of his standout roles was as Principal General Staff Officer to the National Security Adviser at the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) between 2015 and 2021. In that position, he helped shape Nigeria's modern intelligence coordination framework. He was also instrumental in setting up the Intelligence Fusion Centre (IFC) at ONSA a multi agency platform that brought together the Defence Intelligence Agency, National Intelligence Agency, Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Armed Forces to improve threat assessment and response.

Since retiring from active military service, Famadewa has worked as a senior research fellow at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja, where he's continued to contribute to security policy discussions. He's also authored a well regarded monograph titled Policing and National Security in Nigeria, which offers practical ideas for improving civilian-security collaboration.

President Tinubu expressed confidence that Famadewa's appointment will help advance the administration's "Renewed Hope Agenda" by enhancing homeland security initiatives, integrating intelligence efforts, and managing risks more proactively. He urged the retired general to bring his wealth of experience and strategic insight to bear on the nation's security challenges.
