“They Killed Our Maths Teacher in Captivity” – Oyo Governor Confirms as Terror Attack on Schools Turns Deadly.

The governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has confirmed that one of the teachers abducted during a terrorist attack on schools in the Oriire Local Government Area has been killed while in captivity.

Speaking at a press briefing on Sunday, Makinde called the situation “difficult and challenging” and said the government is pushing harder to rescue the remaining victims.

The attack happened on Friday, when gunmen on motorcycles stormed communities along the Ahoro-Esiele/Yawota axis in Ogbomoso. They abducted students and staff from Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele; L.A. Primary School, Esiele; and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School.

Tragically, an assistant headmaster named Joel Adesiyan and a commercial motorcyclist were killed during the assault.

According to Makinde, the state government received a video on Sunday morning showing that a mathematics teacher had been murdered by the terrorists.

“Seven teachers were abducted in total. Sadly, this morning we received a video confirming that one of them the maths teacher has been killed,” the governor said.

Authorities are still working to determine the exact number of schoolchildren taken.

Since the incident, videos from captivity have surfaced online, showing abducted teachers pleading with the government and Nigerians to intervene before more lives are lost. In one viral clip, Rachael Alamu, principal of Community High School, Esiele, can be heard begging for help.

Makinde also disclosed that six people have been arrested within the affected area for suspected ties to the attackers, and another three “persons of interest” are in custody.

“The police commissioner told us six locals have been arrested. Some are believed to be informants or logistics runners for the terrorists,” Makinde said.

Meanwhile, security operatives have been injured during the rescue mission. The governor said that Amotekun corps members, along with police, military personnel, and local hunters, were quickly deployed to chase down the attackers. But during the operation, some Amotekun operatives stepped on improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted by the terrorists.

“They ran into IEDs, and some of our men were wounded,” Makinde confirmed.

Sources told TheCable that the terrorists initially opened fire on security operatives approaching the Old Oyo National Park on motorcycles. When the shooting subsided, an Amotekun member was hit by a dynamite blast while trying to retrieve his bike. He’s now receiving treatment in a hospital.

The governor linked the attack to the increasing pressure on terrorist groups in Nigeria’s northeast, warning that fleeing fighters are moving southward.

“With the heat on terrorists in the northeast, they will keep moving down. The Kwara State governor called me about this. If pressure builds in one place, we must be ready here to repel or neutralize fleeing terrorists,” he said.

Makinde stressed that temporary military operations aren’t enough. “If we do clearance for a week or two and leave, the terrorists will return, and the people stay vulnerable,” he warned.

He assured residents that both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies would be used to rescue the hostages and tackle the growing threat.

“We are not taking this lightly,” he said.

Still, the governor appealed for calm and patience.

“We are doing everything in our power to resolve this quickly and bring our children back safely. But this is a very difficult and challenging situation. There may be no quick fixes,” he added.
