Savory Home-made Crunchies
Science proves that potatoes can grow in space, NASA grew potatoes in space in 1995 as part of their research.
Though full of starch, potatoes are literally 80% water. Come to think of it! Aren’t you tired of spending on that pack or can, be it Pringles or Cheetos over a movie or book read. Purchasing industrial chips from that store when you can make yours.
Especially if you’ve got the time.
Rich in carbs but let’s get the nutritional value of chips, they’re just snacks right, do they have any nutritional benefits? let’s find out
Unlike the industrial ones, homemade chips change the game a lot. You still lose some nutrients to heat, but you keep way more of the good stuff and control the bad stuff.
What you keep with homemade chips:
- More potassium, B6, Fiber
Since you’re not frying at 180°C+ for minutes on end, less gets destroyed. If you bake/air-fry thin slices with skin on at 180-200°C for 15-20 min, you keep ∼60-70% of the potassium and fiber a boiled potato would have.
- You control the oil
Store chips are 30-40% fat by weight. Homemade, you can brush with 1 tsp oil per potato and get it down to ∼5-10% fat. That cuts calories roughly in half.
- No acrylamide overload
Acrylamide forms when potatoes brown too fast at high heat. Homemade lets you pull them out when golden, not dark brown. Still some acrylamide, but way less than commercial.
- Salt is up to you
You can go light, use herbs, garlic powder, paprika instead. That’s the biggest win for blood pressure.
So homemade chips aren’t a “health food,” but they’re closer to “roasted potato slices” than “snack food.” You get the crunch, most of the micro-nutrients, and way less of the stuff you don’t want.
Now we found out that junks can be healthy to some extent, how do we make our home made, no chemical added chips.
Firstly, you’d have to begin with peeling off the back of your potatoes.
- Next, you slice into slim flaky sizes
- Then wash carefully with water to avoid breaking the chip
- Drain into a sift
- Carefully sprinkle salt, some pepper, either black or chilli, and diced onions all to taste.
- Gently, mix- up, cover with foil to marinate for at least five minutes..
- Sprinkle some paprika ( optional)
- Fry in low heat
. Take it out on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
Finally enjoy with ketchup or Guacamole!!
Fun right. plus, you’d be able to make as much as you desire.
Well, Que Los disfrutes !!!
