Opposition Realignment Signals Early 2027 Political Shift.

Following his exit from the Labour Party (LP) and a brief stint in the ADC, Peter Obi, alongside Rabiu Kwankwaso, has aligned with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 elections.

The shift in question began when former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, were reported to have aligned with a new political coalition, known as the Nigerian Democracy Congress (NDC) after withdrawing from earlier opposition arrangements.

This alignment is with the intention to contest for the Nigerian President and Vice Presidents positions respectively.

Obi and Kwankwaso finished third and fourth respectively in the 2023 general election.

Obi defected late last year to the African Democratic Congress with the purpose to challenge President Bola Tinubu.

However, on May 2nd 2026, He resigned from the African Democratic Congress, citing that his decision to leave had been because of disagreements over the party's leadership.

“The same Nigerian state and its agents that created unnecessary crises and hostility within the Labour Party that forced me to leave now appear to be finding their way into the ADC," Obi said on Sunday.

Obi is very popular among young voters across the south, while Kwankwaso wields influence in the north.

Ruling president Bola Tinubu is widely expected to seek a second term, although he has not yet confirmed it.

Political analyst Bala Yusuf told the BBC the move could reshape Nigeria's electoral front.

"If the NDC decides to field Obi as its presidential candidate and Kwankwaso as vice-president, they will definitely be credible rivals against the ruling APC in the election”," he said.

Political activities intensified as presidential candidates continued campaign engagements, meeting party stakeholders, addressing supporters at rallies, and holding consultations with political allies behind closed doors.

During these engagements, supporters from both camps publicly expressed openness to wider cooperation, while some made remarks during media interviews and political gatherings, fuelling speculation that discussions toward a stronger alliance may already be underway.

As attention and knowledge of the upcoming election gets stronger with several political individuals vying for different positions, political analysts and commentators have continued to note in media discussions that the key question now is whether the emerging alignment can overcome long-standing disagreements and maintain enough internal unity to mount a credible challenge in the next presidential election.
