From Germany to South Africa: Fani-Kayode Secures Redeployment After Requesting Change of Posting.

Former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has been appointed as Nigeria's Ambassador Designate to the Republic of South Africa, following a formal request by the former minister to be redeployed from an earlier ambassadorial posting to Germany.

The appointment was approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and Fani-Kayode himself made the announcement on Thursday.

In a personal statement, Fani-Kayode explained that while he had initially been announced as Nigeria's ambassador to Germany, he wrote to the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, asking for a change of posting. He cited both personal and professional reasons behind the request.

According to the former minister, his preference for South Africa was not based on prior familiarity he said he has never visited the country but rather on a strong personal interest in the nation and its strategic relevance to Nigeria's foreign policy objectives.

"I made a formal representation that I was not comfortable with Germany for personal reasons and preferred South Africa, a country I have never been to but have a great interest in," Fani-Kayode said.

He further noted that his request was driven by a deep desire to serve in a country that aligns with his personal convictions on international relations and pan-African engagement. He believes South Africa offers a more suitable platform for him to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria's diplomatic and continental ambitions.

Following discussions with the Foreign Affairs Minister, the request was considered and forwarded to President Tinubu, who gave final approval for the redeployment.

The appointment sees Fani-Kayode, a controversial and outspoken political figure, move from his initially designated post in Europe to a key diplomatic position in Africa's most industrialized economy a role that could carry significant weight in Nigeria-South Africa bilateral relations.
