China Urges Media to Bridge Hearts and Minds Between Nigeria and China.
In Beijing, a senior Chinese official has spotlighted the powerful role of the media in deepening the longstanding friendship between China and Nigeria.
Speaking at the opening of a special seminar for Nigerian media practitioners, Mr. Li Hengtian, Deputy Director of the Education and Training Centre at the China International Communications Group (CICG), described journalists and commentators as “stone arches that build the bridge of understanding” and “the clear breeze that dispels the mist of prejudice.”
While acknowledging the impressive achievements already recorded in China-Nigeria relations, Li stressed that people in both countries still yearn for a deeper, more genuine understanding of each other. He challenged the media to move beyond single narratives and tell more balanced, multifaceted stories.
Quoting renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, he described “stories” as the highest form of human communication, capable of accurately presenting China’s reality and opening a new chapter in bilateral friendship.
On the economic front, Li noted that Nigeria remains China’s largest engineering contracting market in Africa, its second-largest export market, third-largest trading partner, and a major investment destination on the continent.
He pointed to landmark projects such as the Lagos Light Rail, Abuja Rail Mass Transit, Lekki Deep Sea Port, and Zungeru Hydropower Station as shining examples of successful cooperation.
“From the grand vision of the Belt and Road Initiative to the Forum on China Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), China-Nigeria partnership continues to stand out,” he said.
Li also highlighted growing people-to-people ties: more Nigerian youths are studying in Chinese universities, while Chinese engineers and builders are contributing to development projects across Nigeria.
He expressed strong confidence that this year’s efforts to build a “China-Nigeria community with a shared future” will bring even more mutual benefits.
The official called on Chinese and Nigerian media to work more closely together, using diverse perspectives and sincere storytelling to showcase the successes and potential of this friendship. He hopes the ongoing seminar will help open new windows of understanding, tolerance, and trust between the two nations.
Over 20 Nigerian journalists and media aides are participating in the seminar organized by the Institute of International Studies and Advanced Training under CICG.
