Technology, Innovation Emerge as Key Pillars of India-Netherlands Bilateral Ties: PM Modi.

The Hague, Netherlands, May 17, 2026 Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted technology and innovation as central focus areas in the expanding bilateral cooperation between India and the Netherlands. Addressing a vibrant community event here on Saturday, PM Modi emphasised the steady growth in ties between the two nations.

Speaking to a large gathering of the Indian diaspora and friends of India, the Prime Minister described the bilateral relationship as robust and dynamic, particularly in trade and economic spheres.

He noted that the Netherlands ranks among India's largest export destinations in Europe and remains one of its top investment partners. Modi added that the proposed India EU Free Trade Agreement is expected to open significant new opportunities for businesses and economies on both sides.

PM Modi received a warm and enthusiastic welcome from the audience, which featured colourful cultural performances showcasing the rich traditions of Maharashtra and Assam. He expressed deep appreciation for the spirited reception and praised the Indian community for its valuable contributions to Dutch society. He described the diaspora as a "living bridge of friendship" between the two countries.

The Prime Minister also paid tribute to the Surinami Hindustani community, highlighting their deep historical connections with India. He commended their efforts in preserving and passing on their cultural heritage across generations. The Netherlands is home to the largest number of people of Indian origin in mainland Europe, including around 200,000 members of the Surinami Hindustani community. In a significant move, Modi highlighted the liberalisation of OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) eligibility for this community, extending it up to the sixth generation.

Strengthening People to People Ties:

Modi spotlighted the growing presence of Indian professionals in the Dutch technology sector and the increasing number of Indian students pursuing studies in innovation driven fields at Dutch universities. These linkages, he said, are further strengthening contemporary partnerships. He also pointed to sports particularly cricket and hockey as adding fresh vibrancy to bilateral people to people connections.

Vision for Viksit Bharat:

The Prime Minister outlined India's ambitious journey towards becoming a developed nation Viksit Bharat by 2047. He detailed the rapid transformations underway in infrastructure, manufacturing, clean energy, and digital systems, positioning India as a confident contributor to global growth and prosperity. He assured the Indian community abroad of the Government's unwavering support for their welfare and encouraged them to leverage their expertise in the Netherlands to contribute to India's development goals.

The event underscored the deepening multifaceted relationship between India and the Netherlands, blending economic collaboration, cultural exchange, and shared aspirations for innovation led progress.
